what: practice praxis is a 4-week container and group practice series for singers and speakers of all genders. it’s intended to guide you to connect with your own relationship to practice, and build a new accessible routine and approach that aligns with your goals, unique experience, and learning style.
the first workshop will include an overview of practice techniques, common barriers and challenges, an introduction to 4 different practice focuses, and a deep dive into the first step – the warm-up. the following three sessions will explore each of the remaining practice focuses, and have a good chunk of time where we can all practice together but separately (mic off time), before coming back together for reflection and Q&A. outside of live classes, participants will be setting practice goals and working on integrating practice routines into their daily life, answering reflection questions, and filling out a daily practice log.
when: nov 18th & 25th, dec 2nd, & 9th
price: $65-85 sliding scale per session, please email me at info@sweetflagvoicestudio.com if money is a barrier, NOTAFLOF (no one turned away for lack of funds).
what to expect from each week:
week 1 starts with a 2-part foundational workshop on all things practice. in the first part, we’ll discuss what practice is, why we do it, how we do it, barriers to practice, followed by a group discussion of practice experiences and mapping out strategies and goals for our 4-weeks together. in the second part, we’ll start building our own practice routines by dialling in the all important and often overlooked beginning: the warm-up.
week 2 will focus on how (and why) to practice vocal technique. often seen as something nebulous or imaginary, vocal technique is there to serve you and it’s not as scary as it sounds! this session (as well as the next two), will be in 2-parts, the first of which will include a presentation on how and why and what to practice when it comes to technique, breakout rooms to discuss your individual game plan and then some good ol’ group Q&A. in the 2nd part of the session, we will get to take our routine for a ride as we mute ourselves and try out our new practice plan.
week 3 will focus on how to bring your new found technique practice into your singing and speaking in ways that actually shift old patterns and habits. we all have habits we love to repeat and habits love repetition! this session will work on how to use your newly practiced techniques to practice a song or paragraph, and find some more ease and agility with your voice. this process can be slow but it’s so important as it can create new body and brain pathways to transform your songs and speech. in the 2nd part of this session, we will mute ourselves and try out some practice ideas together but separately.
week 4 – we’ve warmed up, we’ve focused on our technique, we’ve started bringing our technique into our songs and speech, and now we are ready to practice expressing ourselves! this session will work on how to practice our style and expression in order to have our song or paragraph actually sound like us. all practice ideas will be invitations to explore your delivery, and play with resonance, phrasing and inflection. in the 2nd part of this session, we will mute ourselves and try out some practice ideas together but separately.
